General 4wd information

The drive from Cairns to the top is approximately 1000kms. The first 300kms is bitumen, the 'dirt road' starts at Lakeland Downs. From here to the top the best way to find out about the road conditions is to contact the roadhouses/fuel stops that are located between Lakeland and the top.

Lot's of people 4 wd through Cape York. It's a great way to see the area.

It's probably best to have a guide book for information about distances, fuel stops and roads. There is one written by Ron & Viv Moon, and one by Lynn & Yvonne Fraser.
There is also a free booklet called Cape York Frontier Explorer available at most camping shows, or send us a stamped, self-addressed envelope to the address at the bottom of this page and we will send you one: ( a long 'business' envelope with a 50c stamp within Australia)

Generally, expect a dirt road that gets a lot of traffic passing, which means washouts at the start of the driving season (May-June) and corrugations as the year goes on. The road north of the Weipa turnoff is usually more challenging.

Always drive on the left side of the road, take care on bends and always drive at a speed that you can stop very quickly if you have to. You never know what someone else is going to do!

Safe and happy travelling,

We look forward to seeing you at the top
